Trying to Describe The Meditation Experience

In ‘A Book For A Change’ I try to describe some of my meditative experiences.

It’s incredibly difficult. There simply are not words (at least, not in my vocabulary) that can adequately convey such a sublime state of being.

Last week we had a similar conversation in Meditation Room, and I know several members of the group over the years have found it tricky to express what happens in their experience too.

Over two thousand years ago, Lao Tzu wrote that ‘the Tao that can be described is not the Tao’.

There is something undifferentiated and yet complete.
Which existed before heaven and earth.
Soundless and formless.
It depends on nothing and does not change.
It operates everywhere and is free from danger.
It may be considered the Mother of the universe.
I do not know its name; I call it Tao.
Tao Teh Ching, Ch 25

Nothing new then – we all find it difficult to put into words.

In my book I called it Extreme Peace – the ‘thing’ that seems to underlie everything else. It is absence and presence at the same time. Expansion and contraction.
Even quantum physicists now agree – there is something that connects us all.

I am forever grateful that Meditation Room participants turn up every week and we get another chance to give it a go, because when we get it right, it is…

If you’d like some help, I guide meditations every Monday online and in person in Hilperton every Tuesday at 7.30pm. Email me to join.
